Guest Post by Karen Booth, Author of Bring Me Back

Big thanks to Jenna for hosting me on the blog this week. She graciously offered to let me write a piece I’ve been wanting to write, about the 80s one-hit wonders who should have been so much more (in my estimation, at least). So, I scoured the list of the decade’s one-hit wonders and after breathing a sigh of relief that The Communards and Pia Zadora only had one chance to leave their mark on the musical landscape, I came up with my list—the artist and their wonder of a one-hit.

Dexy’s Midnight Runners “Come On Eileen” (1983)

What an adorable group of Brits Dexy’s were, and fabulous musicians to boot. When researching this song, I discovered that the inspiration for the title came from the 1960s soul song “A Man Like Me”. No mention of the fact that Bananarama totally stole Dexy’s look for the “Cruel Summer” video.

Modern English “I Melt With You” (1982)

80s Music – Springsteen Double Play

The excitement is growing! I’ll be seeing the Boss LIVE in just over 24 hours! For today’s double play, here are the two songs that I want him to play most. The Boss is well known for changing his setlist constantly – so what he plays to the crowd tonight could be completely different to what we get tomorrow! I know he has played my first choice recently, but I haven’t seen the second on a setlist in a while – I wonder if I’ll get to hear it!

First, the amazing Promised Land (yes, from the 70s, but it’s unbelievable!).

80s Music – All Springsteen, All Week!

I know I’ve done a Springsteen week in the past, but this time it’s different – because on Wednesday evening I’m seeing the Boss LIVE IN CONCERT, for the very first time! I’ve been waiting for this almost my whole life, since I was old enough to have my own radio. I’m beyond excited! On Wednesday I’ll be playing you two of my absolute fave Springsteen songs from the 80s, and on Friday I’ll bring you my review of the concert, which I’m sure will be 5 stars!

To get us going, here is a very  nice photo of the man himself in the 80s. And for your listening pleasure, one of the most amazing ballads of all time, I’m On Fire. Enjoy!

80s Music – Zombie Double Play

Grrrrrrr! Zombie Week continues! Brainnnsss!

At first I thought – how am I going to do my regular Double Play Wednesday with a zombie theme? Have I bitten off more than I can chew (zombie pun)?

And then about 2 seconds later I remembered the scariest thing I ever saw as a kid – Thriller by Michael Jackson. I’m still scared!

Next I remembered that good old Billy Idol jumped on the zombie train with the clip to his song, Dancing With Myself. If anyone can kill a horde of undead, it’s Sir Idol – I want him on my team (mostly for the cool factor).

80s Zombie Week!

ZOMBIES!!! Yes, I’m one of THOSE people – obsessed with the undead and praying for a zombie apocalypse! At the moment my life seems like one big count down to each episode of the non-80s Walking Dead. But these suckers have been around for decades and were definitely a hit in the 80s. That’s why this week is 80s Zombie Week. Prepare to be scared, retro style!

Thanks to the zombie king, George Romero, zombies began to get a cult following in the late 70s. Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead did so much for the genre that is still being felt today. And it definitely spilled over into the 80s. Not only were there excellent additions such as Romero’s Day of the Dead, there were a whole bunch of campy, awful zombie flicks as well!

As an example, here is an episode of ZomboMania – The History of Zombie Movies. These are the WORST! I challenge you to be even a tiny bit scared here!!
