Double Play Wednesday – Olivia Newton John

Ah, Olivs! What a true icon, of both the 70s and 80s. And an Aussie! Today’s double play is devoted entirely to her awesomeness!

First, from the movie Xanadu, which I have gushed about in the past, is the lovely song, Suddenly, performed with Cliff Richard while wearing what can only be described as a mindblowing red sparkly outfit!

Double-Play Wednesday – TV Themes

Monday’s review of Red Dwarf got me thinking about my fave TV theme songs from the 80s. Here’s two of them!

Red Dwarf has what I think is one of the most memorable TV themes ever. It still pops into my head all the time!

Next up, who didn’t love Full House back in the 80s? It was my fave show (until 90210 came along in the 90s, but that’s a different blog!) and I loved Uncle Jesse! It had a fun theme song that I think is still pretty cool (alright, it’s totally tragic, but brings back great memories of simpler times).

The Monday Review – Red Dwarf

The Monday Review – Red Dwarf

Red Dwarf, one of my very fave TV shows. Funnily enough, I always thought this show started in the 90s, so I was pretty pleased to find I was wrong and that it actually began in 1988 and thus I can review it here!

Lister, Rimmer, Cat, Kryten

It is a British comedy, with a basis that goes something like this: Lister, a chicken soup machine repair man, gets accidentally cryo-frozen on the space ship Red Dwarf. Cut to a few million years in the future and Lister wakes up to find he is the only human left in the universe (or is he??). He is joined by a cat-man evolved from Lister’s cat; a computer called Holly; and a hologram of possibly the most lovably-annoying man to ever exist, Rimmer.

Further than this, it is hard to describe what goes on in this show! Using the sci-fi backdrop allows them to go to some pretty weird and fun places. Much of what goes on in the earlier episodes comprises this and the relationship between Lister and Rimmer, which is generally darned hilarious. Later introductions of other characters such as the android Kryten spice up the cast, but even without him they had some pretty awesome comedic chemistry. Lister is the everyman slob, Rimmer is the inconceivably uptight wannabe, Cat is the crazy male fashionista.

Lister and Rimmer

The show ran for a few seasons before going off air, then coming back on air. I haven’t seen the later episodes, but I have heard it lost its mojo along the way. But I will certainly vouch for the earlier episodes, which are totally ACE!

Fab Friday – Any Excuse for Slash!

Triple M is THE Aussie rock radio station. I don’t listen to the radio much, mostly because I dislike most of that newfangled music all the kids are listening to these days and I’m not patient enough to sit through the ads. But if pressed I’ll always put on Triple M because at least it’s got the rock and the guitars going!

Slash, however, I listen to allll the time. Whether in GNR or Velvet Revolver or his newer stuff, I’ve always got time for the Slasher! Now, both have joined forces and there’s an ad on TV with Slash performing the Triple M theme music. There’s not really any point to this post except for you get to look at Slash and he’s playing the guitar. Isn’t that enough??!!

Have a great weekend, y’all!

Double Play Wednesday – Random Songs That Have Nothing to do With Each Other

Why not? They don’t always have to be related! But, you get bonus points if you can come up with a way that they are actually related!

First up, one of my very favorite 80s pop songs, Take on Me by A-ha. Love the clip on this one too!

Double-Play Wednesday – Acapella

I’ve been watching a lot of acapella groups on YouTube lately. I’ve always loved these kinds of performances, with nothing but bare voices and no back up. Happily, in my virtual travels, I’ve come across a few fantastic acapella versions of some classic 80s songs – and I’m sharing two of those with you today!

The first is one of the best acapella performances I think I’ve ever seen, Perpetuum Jazzile doing Africa by Toto. At the start they use their hands and feet to simulate rain and thunder – really amazing.
