The Monday Review – The Decline of Western Civilization Part II

The Monday Review – The Decline of Western Civilization Part II

This is a fantastic docoumentary that was recommended to me by one of my rad Twitter friends, Moose73.

It chronicles the rise of metal in the 80s and it is an absolute riot. Directed by Penelope Spheeris (yep – she of Waynes World!) and featuring such legends as Steve and Joe from Aerosmith, Alice Cooper and Ozzy, it also shows the other side of the story – the bands that haven’t made it yet, and the bands that will never make it.

Penelope Spheeris

The interviews are honest and revealing. I love how open (and intoxicated) most of the guys are – you get a very spot-on idea of what the scene was really like. I have to say Miss Spheeris is a bit annoying as an interviewer in a couple of spots, but she does manage to get some amazing quotes from the bands.

To touch on a seedier side, in researching the doco I read that some of the scenes were faked, such as a scene where Ozzy accidentally spills orange juice all over his table, insinuating that he is so plastered he can’t hold the bottle properly. This reportedly was filmed using someone else’s hand after the fact. There is also a legendary scene with Chris Holmes from W.A.S.P.,  where he tips a bottle of vodka over his head – apparently the bottle was empty and the production crew filled it with water before filming. This is not cool – and also not necessary. The film is that good, it doesn’t NEED the faked scenes to make it better, it stands well enough on its own and they only serve to take some of the sheen off the whole thing.

Chris Holmes of W.A.S.P.

Regardless of this, the film is captivating and buckets of fun to watch, with so many stand out scenes. There’s Chris Holmes talking about how he is a piece of crap while swimming fully clothed in his pool with his mother sitting next to him. The lead singer from Odin talking about how he might as well be dead if the band doesn’t make it (it didn’t). The boys from the Cat Club talking about how they opened the legendary venue as a place to pull girls.

I recommend this as a really good watch, and (even with the faked bits) a very important piece of 80s music history.

The Monday Review – Bill, Ted and Their Most Excellent Adventure

The Monday Review – Bill, Ted and Their Most Excellent Adventure

Today I’d like to talk about a movie that may have had more influence on the way I talk than any other single source. Of course, that is the most righteous Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure!

I’ll never forget the first time I saw this movie (I was only 7 when this was released!) and how I marvelled at the way Bill S. Preston Esquire and Ted ‘Theodore’ Logan slotted into the bizarre world around them. Here’s my patented, super-quick rundown for those unfortunates who haven’t seen it:

Bill and Ted are two best friends who are about to fail history class. This might not seem to matter, but Bill and Ted are, of course, no ordinary dudes. They are destined to bring about world peace with their band Wyld Stallyns – but only if they can pass history. So a most bodacious future guy called Rufus brings a phone box time machine to help them travel back in time, learn history and ace the class. Along the way they meet Socrates, Billy the Kid (aka Mr The Kid), Beethoven, Genghis Khan and other non-heinous historical figures and bring them back to the present…

Sound silly? It is! Gloriously, unapolagetically silly! It was a big hit and is responsible for making Keanu Reeves a star! Shame about Alex Winter, although he was in another of my faves, the Lost Boys, he never really took the next step which sucks, because he is awesome.

What I love most about this movie is how 80s it is, from the music to the dress to the wonderful, wonderful slang. It also spawned what I think is a fantastic sequel – Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey, also highly recommended (STATION!!). Both are movies I can put on when I need a good laugh and I know they will always, always leave me with a smile on my face!

Fab Friday – Dress 80s

Fab Friday – Dress 80s

Here’s an awesome site I found on my Internet travels recently – Rad 80s Fashion!

I think I almost died about five times while looking through this site (I’m all about the 80s stockings!)… my poor, poor credit card is going to get a heck of a workout!

The Monday Review – The Pirate Movie

The Monday Review – The Pirate Movie

Here’s another of my very fave movies from when I was a kid (and that I still adore now!). It seems that not as many people have heard of this one as I would have thought – I guess it’s a bit of a cult movie.

So, if you haven’t heard of it, here’s what it’s all about:

Mabel is a cute but awkward young lady with a heck of a lot of good looking sisters. We open at a dock somewhere, where there’s a pirate festival. Mabel and her sisters stop to watch a display of pirate fighting, led by one mega hunky guy called Frederick. They have a moment and Frederick invites her to go sailing out to an island. Things go wrong (I won’t ruin it – it’s fun!) and Mabel ends up getting a good whack on the head. She passes out and….

Cue dream land. We are now in a land of pirates, treasure, Major Generals and an insane amount of great singing. Mabel is still cute but no longer awkward and she and Frederick begin a romance while also fighting off the incredibly sexy Pirate King and trying to save her home.

Phew! This movie really is non-stop fun. Many of the songs are taken directly from the Pirates of Penzance, so there is a lot of big moments and there are a few 80s-style new songs thrown in. Kristy McNichol and Christopher Atkins are classic 80s and perfect in their roles.  Personally though, I’ve always been more drawn to the Pirate King, played by Ted Hamilton. Devine!

There’s nothing deep or life-changing going on here – but it will leave you with a smile on your face and isn’t that enough?

The Monday Review – Hiatus

Here’s an important fact about my personality – the only thing I am more obsessed with than the 80s is LOST.  And unless you’ve been living under a little pebble, you’d know that the LOST finale is this weekend.  I’ve managed to get through the whole show from ep1 without a spoiler, and I’ll be darned if I’m going to risk getting a finale spoiler now!

So I’ve imposed an Internet blackout until Tuesday, when I’ll have a chance to watch.  This means no Facebook, no Twitter, no YouTube, and no Monday Review! But never fear, the Monday Review will be back.. on Tuesday!  Catch you all then!
