80s Movies – Welcome to 80s Movie Month!

this-is-spinal-tap-1

Yes, it’s 80s Movie Month, and I guarantee it’s going to be a lot of fun! It’s going to be 5 (that’s right, 5!) weeks full of the best and worst the 80s had to offer in film. The decade sure gave us a lot of very forgettable movies, but it also gave us some of the best of all time, and some of the technological and creative advancement that had made modern film so amazing.

To start the month off, I’m going to get personal and let you know some of my absolute favorite 80s movies.

This Is Spinal Tap

This has to be one of the funniest, most clever films of all time. The film is a mockumentary, about fictional heavy metal band, Spinal Tap. It is hilarious in its spot-on satire of the pretensions of musicians, especially during the 70s ad 80s. The “Stonehenge” scene never fails to make me laugh!

Raiders of Lost Ark

I’m sure I’ve spoken about my love of Indiana Jones many times before, but here it is again: the Indiana Jones movies are THE best action-adventure movies ever made, bar none!

Field of Dreams

Ahh, Kevin Costner! What a dreamboat! Add that to the baseball theme, the kind of out-there plot, and the catchy catch phrase (if you build it, they will come), and you’ve got a recipe for a classic movie.

She’s Out of Control

I’ve listed all of my fave 80s makeover movies in the movie section of the site, and this one is the clear winner in my book. It taps into what so many of us girls wanted in the 80s, that desire for the coolness and popularity that could only come with bubble skirts and gravity-defying hair.

80s Music – INXS / Michael Hutchence

michael

Last Sunday would have been Michael Hutchence’s 52nd birthday. It’s hard to believe he’s been gone for such a long time, and hard to imagine what he would have been like in his 50s.

He is still one of music’s biggest losses, but at least we have some amazing songs and videos to remember him by. Today I’m posting two of the best – Michael in sweet mode, and Michael in swagger mode.

First, sweet mode – this is By My Side live in 1991, just 6 years before his death.

Second, swagger mode – this is Need You Tonight, at the same 1991 concert.

80s Movie Month – Sneak Peek!

My-Science-Project

Yes, you read right – starting next week, all of February will be 80s Movie Month! Get ready for some of the best, some of the worst, and some of the weirdest films the decade had to offer! I have a very extensive collection, so I have a lot to share with you. For example, one of my fave silly 80s movies, My Science Project.

This is a sci-fi comedy about two teenagers who break into a military compound to find something to use for their science project. They get more than they bargained for when they find an alien machine that can bend time. The movie is kind of hilarious, and the special effects by today’s standards are really lame, but the whole thing is a bunch of fun. Plus, it has Dennis Hopper in it!

80s Music – Springsteen / Scialfa

springsteen scialfa

To cap off Bruce Springsteen week, here is a video I found documenting the love story between Bruce and his wife, Patti Scialfa.

For those who don’t know, back in 1984 Patti was hired as a backup singer on Bruce’s tour. Not long after, Bruce married a pretty young actress named Julianne Phillips and they were together until 1988. Somewhere during this time, Bruce and Patti fell in love. They moved in together almost immediately after Bruce separated from Julianne, which caused a lot of controversy, but if you watch the video below you can see the amazing chemistry they have together, and still have to this day. They are a couple who I hope last forever!

80s Music – Springsteen Double Play

springsteen_guitar_close_up

I’ve loved Bruce Springsteen for a long time. I love his honest, roots-rock style and his simple-but-meaningful lyrics. After all, there’s a reason why he’s one of the most successful musicians of all time. For today’s double play I have, with great difficulty, chosen my two fave Springsteen songs.

First, this is I’m On Fire – a stunning, passionate, heartbreaking song that I could listen to forever. I also love the story in the clip, it’s different and not what you’d expect.

Next, the epic Dancing in the Dark. This one is worth your time just to marvel at the tight tight jeans!

80s Music – Bruce Springsteen

Springsteen

Last week we had a look at the music of John Mellencamp, and the rad doco about him that is currently screening. Of course, it’s hard to think of Mellencamp without thinking of Springsteen – so welcome to Springsteen week.

I’m especially excited because Bruce has announced a world tour for this year, and I’m hoping he’ll hit my city so I can see him for the first time live!

Which brings me to today’s video – Born in the USA. Check back on Wednesday for more Springsteen!
