Front Row at Bruce Springsteen – Melbourne Concert Review

It was still dark when the alarm rang out through my room. I got out of bed, groggy at first, but then I remembered what day it was – for 25 years I’d been waiting for this moment to arrive.

I headed down to Melbourne’s arena complex, alongside smartly-dressed office workers and those mildly-irritating happy morning exercisers. My friend Silvana and I had purchased General Admission tickets for the Boss, probably the world’s best living performer, and we wanted to be up close so I hit the line up in the early hours of the morning. There was some initial confusion over the line up process, it being very different to how it was officially advertised by the ticket company. But we got our numbers and then – we waited. We waited for hours, got a bit sunburnt and a lot dehydrated (as somewhat of a concert line-up veteran, I know what a bad idea it is to chug a lot of water during the day, especially close to show time, because a trip to the bathroom once you’re inside could mean losing your spot!).

The hours ticked by, the lines grew bigger, the air buzzed with excitement. I looked at the people ahead of me in line, constantly ran the numbers and talked to the people around me who had been to other shows on this tour – where would be the best place to stand? Is it better to be second row centre, or first row side? Right or left of the stage? Silvana had arrived later than me and was a few numbers back – would we be able to meet up inside? Would we have to watch separately? There were way too many variables and I was anxious all the way up until we were inside.

80s Music – All Springsteen, All Week!

I know I’ve done a Springsteen week in the past, but this time it’s different – because on Wednesday evening I’m seeing the Boss LIVE IN CONCERT, for the very first time! I’ve been waiting for this almost my whole life, since I was old enough to have my own radio. I’m beyond excited! On Wednesday I’ll be playing you two of my absolute fave Springsteen songs from the 80s, and on Friday I’ll bring you my review of the concert, which I’m sure will be 5 stars!

To get us going, here is a very  nice photo of the man himself in the 80s. And for your listening pleasure, one of the most amazing ballads of all time, I’m On Fire. Enjoy!

Interview with Nick Feldman of Wang Chung

I hope you’ve enjoyed Wang Chung Week! Today I’m excited to bring you my interview with Nick Feldman, the band’s bassist and guitarist. Wang Chung have a new album out, called Tazer Up!, and I asked Nick about their new work, their old stuff, and being a musician in the 80s.

Pop Eighties: Can you describe how your sound has progressed from your 80s releases to your current album?

Nick Feldman: Our current sound, apart from being a product of the influences and talents that made up our sound IN the 80s, also takes in the influences of the new music we’ve been listening to along the way SINCE the 80s. Both Jack and I have been active in music in our separate ways since the 80s. After collaborating with Jon Moss of Culture Club on a project called Promised Land, doing some film and TV scoring, I then worked for Warner Brothers and then Sony Music in A&R for many years. Since then I have also been working on the TV show the Voice and have managed, produced and written with younger artists.

After Wang Chung, Jack collaborated on Tony Banks of Genesis’ solo album, scored another Friedkin movie, recorded his own solo album and since then has been lecturing at Canterbury University on song composition, has been playing and recording with his jazz band The Quartet and also produced some artists for me when I was working at the record companies.

These activities have kept us both abreast of whats happening on the front line of music and aware of newer and more diffuse music, and this we have co opted consciously and subconsciously into our current sound, compositionally and production-wise.

On Tazer Up!, what we have tried to achieve in it’s general concept is a nod to our 80s roots but at the same keeping the album sounding current and relevant.

Pop Eighties: What would you say is your standout track from Tazer Up?

80s Top 5… Axl Rose Fashion Choices

Axl Rose was one of those great rock frontmen who completely fell apart, as great frontmen are wont to do. But before Guns n Roses disintegrated Axl and co were on top of the world. In particular, I think Axl made a huge visual impact with his look and his fashion choices. For someone who had lovely red hair and quite a soft face, he sure pulled of some rock star swagger! Therefore, behold! My top 5 Axl Rose fashion choices!

5. Makeup and teased hair

4. Ripped jeans and no shirt under jacket

3. Aviator sunnies and jacket half on

2. Purple bandana and singlet

1. White shorts and flag jacket

80s Music – Diva Double Play

Diva week continues! On Monday I posted two songs by the one and only Mariah Carey. Today, I have a video each from two more divalicious singers!

First up, Taylor Dane. She’s a bit less famous than someone like Mariah, but she definitely had the chops to make it onto the diva list!

Next, I’m sorry, I had to do this – it’s Barbs! Ms Streisand is one of the originals, so there was no way I could leave her out this week…

Mariah Carey

80s Music – Diva Week

All this week I’ll be posting about not just female singers, but that very upper echelon of female singers, the Divas. Think Whitney, think Mariah – I’ll be getting to as many of them as possible this week!

To start with, let’s talk Mariah. She may have a couple of screws loose somewhere, but what a voice! Her vocal range is almost impossible to emulate which is one of the reasons why she remains such a legend today. (If you’re a fan you will have already picked up on the fact that Mariah actually debuted in 1990 – but I don’t mind, I claim everyone from 1990 as the 80s anyway!)

Here are Mariah’s first two singles from her debut album. First, Vision of Love:

Next her second single, the vastly superior Love Takes Time:
