80s Fashion – Hip Hop

Can you believe there’s only one week left of 80s Fashion Month?! Don’t forget to enter the competition to win $50 worth of Zazzle products, just by leaving a comment on any post of the month! To finish off the week, let’s take a look at another alternative fashion of the decade – Hip Hop. The 80s is when this genre of music really became popular, with acts such as Run DMC, LL Cool J and Salt n Pepa having massive hits, both within the genre and in the mainstream. To go along with the cool music, there were some amazing fashions – definitely different to your average pop star!

Check out some of the great fashion below, and have a great weekend!

80s Music – Rock and Hip Hop

On Monday I posted about one of my favorite looks of the 80s – hard rock. On Friday I’m going to be looking at another alternative fashion, 80s hip hop. Today, you get both!

To start us off, here is one of the best looking rock acts of the decade – Guns n Roses, with Welcome to the Jungle.

80s Fashion – Counter Culture

So far during 80s Fashion Month we’ve looked at 80s hair, 80s supermodels and my own memories of 80s fashion. And there’s still 2 weeks to go! This week I’m going to be delving into 80s alternative culture and fashion. It definitely wasn’t all pop fashion going on through the decade! I think the 80s were the first decade of the 20th century that had a huge range of sub cultures, especially amongst youth.

One of my favorite looks of the decade was the heavy rock look. This was popularized by bands like Guns n Roses and Motley Crue, and their respective groupies and entourage, and is always what I thought looked coolest! I still pay homage to this look today, though I go for a more subtle and updated version.

80s Fashion – My Favorite 80s Outfit

This week I’ve had a look back at my own memories of fashion in the 80s. I loved everything about it, and I still do! I look at pictures of fashion from back then and think it looks amazing, that everyone looked so bright and happy and sexy and stylish. I wish we could go back!

But since we’re stuck here, 80s Fashion Month will continue next week! To get you in the mood for the weekend, I’d like to show you my very favorite outfit from the decade. This is a dress you will probably recognize from a movie you likely love – Pretty in Pink, starring the divine Molly Ringwald.

Seriously.

Alright, this might just be the ugliest dress ever made, but that’s why I love it – only in the 80s could this be the big reveal of the main character’s prom dress! It’s very pink, very ill-fitting and very, very rad. Have a great weekend!

80s Music – What I Wanted to Wear

Time for this week’s fashion double play! On Monday I gave you some insight into what I wore back in the 80s. But I was young and constantly looked up to women who wore amazing fashion. I couldn’t wait until I was old enough to wear what they wore – little did I know the fashion would change so completely by then! (No offense to today’s fashionistas, as I keep up with modern trends myself, but the fun and magic of 80s fashion is definitely missing.)

Madonna

So, without further ado, here are two music vids starring some of the fashion I dreamed of wearing in the 80s! To start us off, here is the original style icon herself, Madonna, with Like a Virgin. I love every single thing she wears here, especially the black skirt over blue tights…

80s Fashion – What I Wore

Last week we spent a lot of time looking at those lovely, perfect 80s supermodels. But, what did the average joe, like me, wear during the decade? I was young, so I wore kid clothes – though I always dreamed of growing up and wearing amazing outfits like Stephanie Kaye from Degrassi High (she used to wear normal clothes to school and then get changed into very trampy outfits in the toilets. Awesome!).

Stephanie Kaye

Throughout the decade I wore matching skirt / blouse combinations in bright colors, denim skirts, hand-me-down tshirts and lycra bike shorts under EVERYTHING!

Me in the 80s. Note the half up/half down hairstyle. Rad!

I also used to wear denim shorts over colored bike shorts with the edges rolled up. Now THAT’S fashion! (Note: I just went looking for photos to illustrate my point, and apparently this look is back in fashion – seems I was a trendsetter at the ripe old age of 10!)
