I’m not really one for modern new-fangled games. I find them confusing (read: I am crap at them!). But I LOVE old school games, which is why I’m pretty excited about this: Pepsi Throwback and Atari are teaming up for something very cool – until the end of the year on theĀ Pepsi Throwback Facebook page you will be able to play a different classic Atari game each month! And each week’s highest scorer will win an Atari Flashback 2+ gaming console! You can also enter to win an iCade and iPad loaded with Atari’s Greatest Hits.
How rad is that?! The first game was Asteroids, released in 1979 but HUGE in the 80s. Who knows what gem we’ll get in July? Definitely worth stopping by the page, if not for the prizes then just for the cool retro fun!
Today I’m all about my other fave video game from the 80s – Super Mario Brothers 3!
This is one of the most famous games of all time, and likely needs no introduction, but here’s the storyline anyway…
Mario and Luigi embark on a mission on behalf of Princess Toadstool to stop Bowser and his children—the Koopalings—from terrorizing the kings of seven regions in the Mushroom World. The Koopalings stole the kings’ magic wands and transformed them into animals.
This is another classic left-to-right game (as I mentioned on Monday, that’s the only type I can play!). Everything about it is totally iconic and I remember it being really quite hard to complete (especially Giant Land, where everything gets super big!).
I have seen this type of game making a comeback recently on Nintendo DS etc., and I think that’s a great thing – it’s not fancy but it’s a heck of a lot of fun!
Alright, so it was a bit of a feat trying to tie this week’s games theme into a double play! The best I could come up with was to give you two of my fave 80s songs that have the word “game” in the lyrics!
First, a classic ballad by Berlin – Take My Breath Away… (I so dig this clip! I feel the need for speed!)
This week I’m going to revisit some of my fave video games from the 80s. I can’t say I was a massive game head in the decade, but there were some games that I still love and play now – I even have an old Sega Master System II that I use to play them!
Today I’m going to show you my all time fave – a game called Wonder Boy III – The Dragon’s Trap.
Here’s the storyline:
Curses! After having defeated the mighty MEKA dragon, Wonder Boy discovers to his dismay that a terrible spell has been cast on him by the mortally wounded beast: He's been changed into a Lizard-Man!
Now the only thing that can save him is the Salamander Cross. Legend has it that the magical cross has been hidden by the Vampire Dragon deep within Monster Land. To get the cross and change Wonder Boy back to his original appearance, you'll have to journey through desert, jungles, under the deep blue sea and even underground. And in each of these lands, you'll have to overcome an evil dragon!
Guide Wonder Boy through Monster Land, but be prepared to battle some of the most deadly, frightening creatures you've ever faced. Each step can mean death. each battle may be the last. Above all, be prepared for change!
I love this game so much! It’s your classic left-to-right style game (which is the only type I can play – I can’t get used to those new fangled 360 degree games!). You collect treasure, open chests, buy and upgrade armour and weapons, – totally classic game play. My fave feature of this one was that you change into different versions of yourself during the game – mouse-man, pirhana-man, lion-man and hawk-man.
There is so much to do and see in this game, it keeps me occupied for hours on end – and I’m still not even all that good at it! (I’ll never be a pro-gamer!!)

Michael Jackson is so quintessentially 80s it’s almost stupid to bother saying so! Love him or hate him, there’s no denying the man was a legend and his music throughout the decade was iconic. Since his death in 2009 everything MJ has come back into fashion (though I’m not convinced it ever left!). The latest thing on the market is a new Nintendo game called Michael Jackson: The Experience.
I have to say, this looks beyond awesome! In the game you dance along with some of MJ’s best songs – 26 in total, including my faves of his – Smooth Criminal, Bad, Beat It, Thriller and Remember the Time (best film clip ever!). The graphics look really cool as you can see in the shots below.
Of course, the best thing about games like this for the Wii and such is that you’re exercising while you’re playing – therefore, it’s all guilt free! I am a total dance enthusiast and think it would be a lot of fun to try out those classic MJ moves.
I’d love to hear from anyone who’s played – what did you think?
